Buying gear for a Japan trip
For a first Japan trip, rent boards, own boots is the usual advice — boots are personal and take multiple fittings. Once you ride yearly, investing at home pays off.
- Buy before you fly: base layers, good socks, goggles with low-light lens, gloves (two pairs), and a shell that fits over a mid-layer.
- Consider buying in Japan: accessories, wax, some clothing — Akakura and Tokyo outdoor shops run winter sales; duty-free may apply for tourists on eligible items.
- Do not over-pack boards: airline ski fees add up; rent until you know your preferred width and flex.
- Helmet: light and packable; worth owning if you ride trees or icy days.
Ship nothing unless you are staying multiple seasons — carry-on space for thermals beats checking a second bag of hardgoods.
